Today, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, continues to commit crimes that violate international law. The American government has laws against these crimes, and according to them, not only Azerbaijan, but also its head should be subject to sanctions, ANCA Spokesperson Elizabeth Chuljian said live on Alpha News.

“Congress should have called on the White House and the US Department of State to focus on preventing another genocide. Mr. Ocampo explained very clearly: you cannot have real negotiations between the genocidaire and the genocidal.

First of all, the American government must focus on ending the genocide and send humanitarian aid to Artsakh. I think the United States must do everything to avoid becoming complicit in the ongoing genocide. It should stop supporting the Azerbaijani government, both in the form of weapons and in any other way,” Chuljian said.

According to her, the United States is trying to avoid unambiguous classification of Azerbaijan’s actions.

“The United States is currently not taking decisive actions regarding the ongoing genocidal policy, and negotiations are taking place without pressure on Azerbaijan. Despite the fact that the United States condemns Azerbaijan, words are no longer enough. Concrete measures must be taken. Participants of congressional hearings explained very clearly how the United States can exert pressure on Azerbaijan, for example, by emphasizing that Azerbaijan is committing genocide against Artsakh, then applying sanctions against Azerbaijan and its leaders, and also stopping military assistance. It seems that the United States wants to avoid such hearings because it knows that they will not say what Congress would like to hear,” Chuljian said.

To remind, on September 6, the Human Rights Commission of the US Congress discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
