It is now important for US to destabilize Caucasus region, expert says
Vladimir Vasiliev, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, commented to Alpha News on the statement of US intelligence that tensions in relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan will continue in 2024.
According to the expert, the United States duplicates the opportunity to destabilize the situation in the South Caucasus, in particular in Armenia.
“My feeling is that the United States is now trying to create a certain kind of problem for Russia, another hotspot that would divert Russia’s resources and capabilities. This is a standard American tactic, given the fact that Ukraine is currently less of a priority for American policy.
There is a split in America in relation to Ukraine, so in this case, although the Americans continue to provide assistance to Ukraine, I have the feeling that the United States is duplicating the opportunity to destabilize the situation in the Transcaucasus, in particular in Armenia, given the latest statements by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the possibility of quitting the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Therefore, maybe the United States really wants to create a situation with another fairly serious hotspot,” Vasiliev said.
According to the expert, the United States wants to weaken Russia’s position in the region.
“The United States is now in a position where it is important for it to simply destabilize the situation instead of solving any problems in the region. Today, this stems from the American approach, specifically towards Russia. The US wants to weaken Russia’s position or play on weakening Russia’s position in the Transcaucasus; this is already a clear American strategy and tactic in this region,” Vasiliev concluded.
