French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies commented on the Armenian National Assembly’s decision to declare August 3 the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Yazidi Genocide in Sinjar.
He noted that the martyrdom of Yazidis in Sinjar is a repetition of the martyrdom of Armenians who were subjected to genocide in 1915—with a century difference.
“The Armenian National Assembly has included the Yazidi Genocide Remembrance Day in its national calendar,” the ambassador said on X, adding that he was proud to represent France on this historic day in the hall of the National Assembly.
On August 3, 2014, the Islamic State attacked the Yazidi-populated Iraqi town of Sinjar. More than 3,000 people were killed. Thousands of people who sought refuge in the mountains died of hunger, thirst, and unbearable heat. 200,000 Yazidis became refugees, about 5,000 women and girls aged 13 to 56 were abducted.
