Gaspar Karapetyan, President of the ARF Armenian National Committee of Europe, told Alpha News about the 109th commemorative ceremony of the Armenian Genocide held in Brussels.
“Despite the bad weather, the event dedicated to the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was successfully held in Brussels, with Armenians and a large number of people of other nationalities participating.
A day before the event, the young people organized a candlelight vigil, and in the morning, a memorial service was held, after which the attendees went to the khachkar honoring the victims of the Armenian Genocide. There were senior officials, clergymen, and people of other nationalities, such as Assyrians and Jews; there were also Turks, as well as public and cultural figures of Belgium. I had a brief talk with the Belgian Foreign Minister, who also attended the event. We discussed various issues, as well as the issue of Artsakh. He also laid a wreath near the monument,” Karapetyan said.
According to him, the topic of the Armenian Genocide was also widely covered by the media.
“The media also covered this event. Luis Moreno Ocampo, who was the first prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for 10 years, also attended the event. He called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was supposed to meet with Aliyev the next day, to raise the issue of the return of Armenian prisoners held in Baku. His Holiness’ speech was also interesting, if we consider that the Armenian authorities said ‘Meds Yeghern’ instead of the term ‘genocide’, just like the USA was doing two years ago,” Gaspar Karapetyan concluded.
