There can be no doubt about Armenia’s sovereignty over Syunik road – Sergey Stankevich
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Sergey Stankevich commented on Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s statement that Moscow had provided all the necessary clarifications to Iran regarding the so-called “Zangezur corridor”.
According to the expert, information provocation was spread in Iran, which is completely untrue.
“This is an attempt to solve a problem that appeared out of nowhere. The fact is that Iran showed unexpectedly offended reactions. Some provocative rumors were spread in Iran that allegedly Russia wants to take control of the ‘Zangezur corridor’, wants to help to withdraw this territory—this border strip next to Iran—from the sovereignty of Armenia, and something like that. That is, some kind of information provocation was spread, which is completely untrue. In order to stop the further spread of baseless rumors aimed at instigating a conflict between Moscow and Tehran, official written explanations were sent. In my opinion, this is the right step.
That’s what should have been done because just exchanging some remarks in the media is not enough in such a situation. That is, there should have been a doctrinal position in the form of a diplomatic note. For sure, there was an explanation in this document that there can be no doubt about Armenia’s sovereignty over the territory of this Zangezur or Syunik road and that it should be developed taking into account, of course, Armenia’s sovereignty, which remains inviolable,” Stankevich said.
